Claiming the Beatitudes

Claiming the Beatitudes

Nine Stories from a New Generation

The Beatitudes Society was formed in 2005.   It’s purpose being to raise consciousness among seminarians about the kind of life envisioned by the beatitudes.  The Society has  over four hundred members in seminaries of many denominations.

Beginning each chapter is an interview with a  Beatitudes Society member.  The member discusses what a beatitude has come to mean to them.  Concluding each chapter is  a commentary by Anne Sutherland Howard, preacher-in-residence at Trinity Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara, California

Modern Meanings of Beatitudes

Some of the questions posed by the authors may change your perception of the relevance of the beatitudes in our modern world.  As an example, in Chapter 6 the author examines “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” – Matthew 5:8.    The author asks, “Do we really want to see God?”  Aren’t we afraid it might change us, take us out of our comfort zone?   You will have to read the book to find the answer.  I know that reading this book changed my understanding of some of the beatitudes.
