Breaking news: Jesus discards “Israelites only” policy.
After rejecting the plea of the Canaanite Woman, Jesus says: I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. If the gospel would end right here at this point, you and I would not be Christians. – Because Jesus would not have allowed it. Because you and I, we do not have the pure, unsoiled Israelite bloodline. And neither have millions of other followers of Christ in this country and all over the world.
This is a turning point for Jesus and his ministry. Jesus changes his mind because of the woman’s persistence, and heals her daughter. He changes; he corrects his error. This moment, when Jesus makes the conscious effort to overcome his cultural predisposition and treat all people with love and respect, this moment will help define one of the core principles of our Christian faith: That all of us are beloved children of God, and that all of us, independent of race and ethnicity deserve to be treated as equals.
Jesus felt safe and comfortable in his “Israelites only’ policy, but had he continued with it, the worldwide movement of Christianity would not exist.
