Does Jesus Really Call Us To Set the Oppressed Free? – Paul’s Letter to Philemon

Paul’s letter to Philemon had been used throughout the times of slavery in America to justify the institution of slavery and the Fugitive Slave Law, which required that slaves who managed to escape needed to be returned to their ‘owners’ even if they had made it to a non-slaveholding state. However, in close examination we will see that it is not even clear that the letter is about a runaway slave. When we use this letter to condone slavery, we misuse the bible and deny Jesus’ call for liberation and flourishing for all.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)
