Eager to Learn – Luke 10:38-45

Martha and Mary – for the longest time, these sisters have been viewed as allegories for two ways of serving Christ – the way of service and the way of contemplation. People who follow this allegorical view have underemphasized the fact that Martha and Mary are women, real people, and instead transformed them into symbols, which stand for something else. Today, I am suggesting to have Martha and Mary stand in their own right, to view them as real people, as friends and students of Jesus. Mary seats herself at Jesus feet, as his disciple, his student, ready to learn. And Jesus teaches her, as if it was nothing unusual at all. Jesus teaches a woman as if he would teach a man. That goes against all societal expectations of the time. And it confirms what we know about Jesus through many other biblical stories: Jesus reaches out to people of all genders, all ages, all races, all ethnicities, poor and rich, healthy and sick. He seeks relationships with all people, he sees us, all of us, as valid human beings, made in the image of God, worthy of his attention, his love, and his teachings.
