Easter – The Promise of New Life Makes Disciples Fearless

One of the most common phrases in the bible is “Do not be afraid” in all its variations, like, fear not, have no fear, fear him not. That of course depends on the translation, it can also be fear thou not, fear ye not, etc. There is a legend out there that this phrase is in the bible 365 times, once every day. I have counted, or I have let my bible software count the instances, it is not 365 times, but rather around 150-ish times in the whole bible, both Old and New Testament. That’s not once for every day, but enough to give us a hint at the concept that God is going for. Or to be completely historically-critically accurate, it is the prime concept of how the biblical writers have understood the human relationship with God since the time of the patriarchs, which is about 5000 years ago. Our saints for today, St. Felicity and St. Perpetua are prime examples of courage that grows from faith in Jesus Christ.
