Facing the Truth Liberates Us for a Life of Mercy and Justice

Amos, in the name of the Lord, accuses the Israelites of trampling on the poor, taking bribes, and pushing aside the needy in the gate. And he also tells them that they will not have the opportunity to enjoy their ill-gained riches for very long. We can understand this as a threat, or as a consequence. In the long run, no society can function if it is not built on fair systems of distribution which enable ALL people, and not only the very few, to make an acceptable living. At the core of all the instructions God gave his people to live by is the command to care for the neighbor, especially the neighbor who is in need. The people of Israel are not caring, therefore God sends his prophet Amos to tell them that their moral compass is not working; their plump line is not straight. But will they listen?
