How to Keep our Children Safe
We live today in a deeply divided country. Our generation, my generation, is waging partisan wars with each other. Every question, every problem, every national tragedy is immediately sorted into the most extreme partisan positions, from which no solution, no compromise can be found. And what that really means is that we are leaving our children with a mountain of unsolved problems, which grows larger every day. Like everybody else, I am devastated because of the massacre, which happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida this month. – Again, another massacre. – Again, devastated students, parents, and teachers. – And again, leaders of this country taking cover behind their partisan solutions for our national crisis of gun violence instead of talking with each other, and trying to calmly walk through all available pros and cons of all available possible solutions together. And then, to together decide what is best for our children. Because of one thing I am sure: An American answer to this crisis can be found; but I am equally sure that it will only be found if people walk towards each other instead of clinging to the extreme ends of possible opinions and spitefully turning the wheels of hate. We need to be peacemakers. And that is hard work. It requires spiritual discipline. We cannot afford any longer to engage in partisan tactics. We need to take up our cross and walk towards each other.
