Palm & Passion Sunday – Some disciples follow Jesus and pay the ultimate price. Mark 14:40
Our saint for today is Jimmie Lee Jackson. He was the youngest deacon of St. James Baptist Church in Marion, Alabama. In 1965 he was shot by an Alabama State Trooper and died 8 days later in hospital. At a voting rights march, the state troopers clubbed the marchers. Jimmie Lee, his sister, mother, and 82-year-old grandfather fled to a restaurant. They were pursued by state troopers. They cornered them and beat Jimmie Lee. When his sister tried to help him, they beat her too. Then they turned on Jimmie Lee’s mother. When Jimmie Lee tried to protect her, one officer clubbed him and the second officer shot him twice in the abdomen. Jackson stumbled outside and received more beatings from more officers. Finally, he collapsed in front of the bus station. He was taken to the hospital, where he was served with an arrest warrant. He died before they could throw him into jail. The shooter pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in 2010. He got sentenced to six months in prison.
