What is really important in life?
Recently a person I met said; we’re so bugged down by the stress of life that we should every once in a while slow down to figure out what’s really important.
Maybe also pick a month and give up something. Take a step back from consumerism.
I think that is a great idea. Christians do that for the last 2000 years.
It’s called Lent, the 40 days before Easter.
This Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent.
Of course the person freaked out when I told him that he just suggested a 2000-year-old Christian faith practice.
But when his heart palpitations calmed down and color came back to his face I told him that church is not about ridgid rules that suck the fun out of your life, but Christian or not, the church wants you to be a mature, brain using human being who can figure out what is right and who also has the courage to act upon that insight.
The practice of Lent can help with that.
