The Gospel of Light

The ‘Gospel of Light’ in John’s first chapter provides us with this memorable image of how Jesus works in our lives: The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. First of all, I would like to use this opportunity to give a big shout-out to darkness. Really, without darkness, there would be no way that we could value, or even recognize light. Also, darkness in itself is not always a bad thing. When there are lights everywhere competing for our attention, it can be very helpful to retreat into darkness for some time, to wipe our hard drive, so to speak, to go back to zero, to empty our minds and hearts, and then to look at things again from a new and fresh perspective. By allowing us to ‘go dark’ in regular ‘intervals, we make room for the light of Jesus to shine all the brighter within us.
