The US Military and the 10 Bridesmaids (5 bright & 5 foolish)

It is Veterans day Sunday and we think about our military.

We do that by reflecting on a story that seems to have very little to do with the military. 5 foolish bridesmaids don’t have their lamp oil ready when they are called to light the way of the bridegroom to the house of the bride.

We have to be ready to take care of our soldiers like smart bridesmaids in ancient Israel. We have to have our lamp oil ready which is uncompromising good citizenship. A citizenship that is guided by the gospel and that cares about and for our military. We don’t send them to war just because some politician says so, but we rigorosly examine the motivations that underly the claim the military force is necessary. Our soldiers are more than a pawn in a global game for power and resources. They pay the price when we are complacent, uninformed and disinterested. The military is the military of the people.
