What Does it Mean to be Great in Jesus Eyes?

Sermon series on the Letter of James. 2 of 4

When God came down to earth in form of the simple carpenter’s son with the name Jesus, God chose to live a humble life. God chose to experience human life from the downside, not the upside. After all, God could also have chosen to come to earth in form of a great king or military hero, but God didn’t. And throughout Jesus’ ministry this confused his followers greatly! They cannot imagine that a person with this power of feeding and healing and teaching people, and even bringing them back to life, could be anything other than a king! Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant – That is what greatness means in Jesus’ eyes, in God’s eyes: humble service. Not: Great achievement, riches, honor, magnitude, power, lordship, victory, and pride; no, humble service. Many contemporaries of Jesus expected Jesus to gather an army, take up weapons, and forcefully liberate the people of Israel from oppression through the Roman Empire. After all, there were prophecies of the Messiah foretelling exactly that. But Jesus did not act according to those expectations. Jesus chose the path of peace. And that path led him to defeat, according to secular values, and even death. If we don’t see the world from the perspective of the defeated, we do not see the world from the perspective of God.
